Curiosity was a culmination of artworks that I felt I created in a state of curiosity and exploration. I was inspired by Curiosity Cabinets. I have always loved the weird mix of artefacts that are displayed, the mismatching worn labels, and the stories of the uncanny objects. I planned to create one that explored identity and folklore. The exhibition grew around these themes.
I want to acknowledge the problematic colonial beginnings of these cabinets. Although they were used for natural history, they were also used to display the, often stolen, 'treasures' collected by the wealthy and powerful from around the world. It was sad to learn that history. Many early museums were founded on collections from these cabinets.
